Meryl Streep

No sarcastic, snappy or random title this time because this post is about Meryl Streep and there's just nothing funny about what a great actress she is.
She is without a doubt one of the best actresses of all time (and also one of my favourite actresses of all time). She also possesses such a unique and timeless beauty, and is ageing quite gracefully. (I personally love her cheekbones.)
She's simply the best.
She's been nominated for an Academy Award 14 times, for films like; Julie & Julia, The Bridges of Madison County and Out of Africa, and actually won the award twice for Kramer vs. Kramer and Sophie's Choice. She's almost gotten nominated every single year since 1979. Almost.
Her record-breaking 16 nominations, are something that is joked about a lot at the Academy Awards, specially last year in the opening monologue when Steve Martin jokingly said that the Academy ends up 'nominating Meryl Streep no matter what'.

On the same night Stanley Tucci also said:

That is why I have spearheaded a movement in the Academy to cap the number of nominations per actor at 16, which means that this could be the last time that anyone would have to stand up here and say despite their personal feelings that Meryl Streep is quite simply the best.
But we all know that she'll be coming back for more. I would bet everything I have that she'll get another nomination for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in the film The Iron Lady when it is released. She's so good you don't need to actually see the movie to know how good she'll be in it.
In 2004 she was also the recipient of the 32nd annual AFI Lifetime Achievement Award.

Things get very intense after the jump.

I'm not going to call myself a die-hard fan of hers, because I have not seen every single movie she's ever been in, I've only ever seen about 10 movies out of more than 60 that she's been in.

I first discovered Meryl Streep in another movie, Stuck on You. I know weird. "Really that weird movie with Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear (note: whom, I love long time)?" Well, YES! And it's actually quite a funny movie, thankyouverymuch. It's one of those so bad it's good type movies. Anyway, she does a small uncredited cameo in the film as herself and I just found her very likeable. Now, keep in mind that I must have been around 15-16 when I first saw this movie so I am again excused.

And so it began everytime I 'd see a movie she's in I became more and more fascinated by her. She delivers in the dramatic roles as well as the funnier ones. And she's not afraid to portray the "villain" of a movie, and in my book if an actor can make you hate them in one movie and then make you love them in the other, that means they're fantastic.
And let's face it even if you're a complete imbecile when it comes to films you can still tell what a terrific actress she is. Because... just play this vid of Cam from Modern Family, he sums it up so perfectly:

If someone actually told me something along those lines to my face, I'm not sure it would be appropriate for me to describe what I might do to/tell them.

What does Meryl Streep have to do with Glasgow, you ask?
Well, during the Glasgow Film Festival this year there was a Meryl Streep retrospective, where about 10 films that she's starred in where screened at different times and in different venues.
I was so glad when I found out that a retrospective of her work was going to be part of the festival. Not because I would be able to go see some of her movies, but because now I have an excuse to write a blog post about her and still make it relevant to the theme of the blog. So, I technically am allowed to write about her. (See what I did there. *winks*)

The movies that were screened at the Festival were (in chronological order as well, bravo!):

(click on each movie for a link to their trailers)
The festival's co-director Allan Hunter explained that the reason behind his choice was that 'Meryl Streep is currently enjoying a fresh wave of popularity among the generation who've seen The Devil Wears Prada, so [they] thought it might be interesting to go back and let people see the spectrum of her career.'

And so ends my ramble on Meryl Streep. And as a bonus please enjoy one of my favourite moments of her below:

You gotta love her.
That's all.
